Waltham Size 16 Keyless - 1908, 1899 & 1888 models.

During the last quarter on the 19th century and for the first few years of the 20th America, and in particular Waltham (their factory shown to the right) were the world leaders in good quality volume produced watches.

The American Watch Company was formed in 1859 from the wreckage of a number of failing companies and was known by a succession of names. In the early days they marketed watches under a wide range of company names depending on the grade of watch for example “The Home Watch Co" and "P. S. Bartlett". So for convenience they were collectively known as “Waltham” watches from the town outside of Boston where they had their factory and later became the American Waltham Watch Co. Further information on size 16 Waltham watches is available on my blog page here.

Shown in descending order of price e&oe! Riverside, Vanguard and other top grades are listed with the size 16 railroad grade watches.

Click on image for another picture and on "More pictures" for more on Zenflio. Please remember that hi-res photos are several times life size and will make some tiny flaws, marks, etc. look huge!

Unless otherwise stated all watches have 7 jewels are working, keep at least reasonable time for their age and wind and set correctly. Lids and bezels are secure, stay closed and where appropriate open when the button or crown is pressed. Any inscriptions, dedications or monograms (other than jewellers and makers marks) and any gold plate worn through to the core will either be shown in the photographs, described in the text or both.

Of the watches I buy in, the most frequently re-cased are those by Waltham so there is a good chance that there will be some on the Discounted Watches page.

A size 16, split plate movement with 9 jewels, a Swiss lever escapement and a Breguet sprung cut compensated balance with double roller. It is adjusted for temperature and in three positions. Crown wound and set. The serial number dates it to 1942.

As confirmed by the catalogue number it was originally supplied to the Royal Navy during WWII with luminous hands and face, it was retained at the end of the war, unlike around two million pounds worth of surplus watches and clocks that were sold off. Later, following the introduction of Nuclear submarines in 1960, it was given non-luminous hands and dial so that the relatively high radiation levels (by todays standards) would not confuse on-board radiation detection equipment. The case was then stamped "Non-Lum".

W792. Waltham 1908-635 The "Russell" Model, 17J Hunter, 1918.

A size 16, split plate movement with 17 jewels, a Swiss lever escapement, Breguet sprung cut compensated balance, adjusted for temperature and with a micro adjuster. Crown wound and set. The serial number dates it to 1918.

The movement was made specifically for Thos Russell of Liverpool and is engraved "The "Russell" Model", I have seen a few open faced "Russell" models but only open faced versions and these were designated as a 1908-638. I have only seen two other resellers with their own engraving on Walthams, Preston's of Bolton and the Waltham Warehouse (owned by case makes Dennison) and these very infrequently, so this is a pretty rare example.

A size 16, split plate movement with 15 jewels, a Swiss lever escapement with a Breguet sprung, cut compensated balance and micro adjuster. Crown wound and set. The serial number dates it to 1904.

R.R. Fogel of New York had an agreement to sell Waltham watches into South American markets, the special order movements were styled "Cronometro" and came from various Waltham product lines and grades. The 1899 model "Victoria" is a 15 jewel movement similar to the -620. The movements were often recorded in production records simply as "Export" and could be in mixed runs so it is not known how many were made. But they are rare in UK.
