Size 16 Railroad Grade Watches & High Grade American.

The section contains true size 16 railroad grade watches plus the highest grades of watches by US makers such as Hamilton (their factory is pictured right) and Waltham including their Maximus (rarely!), Vanguard, Crescent Street, Riverside, Royal, PSB and 630-645 grades.

Overall the top grade size 16 watches by Waltham and their US peers are some of the finest pocket watches made, some are as good but few are better. Further information size 16 watches by Waltham can be found my Blog by selecting "S16 Walthams" on the header bar to show an index of the more important postings or "Waltham S16" under "Labels" which will give rather more.

Size 16 – Railroad Watches & Waltham's American Watch Co, Vanguard, Crescent St, Hillside & Riverside grades S14 & S16. . RSAdWatches I describe as "Railroad watches" conformed to all of the requirements for such a watch when manufactured although they may have Canadian rather than American dials, those I describe as "Railroad Grade" are variants of the same quality but may have a non-conforming dial or have been made with crown rather than lever setting for non-railroad use.

Do not confuse the model year with the date of manufacture which can be 20 or more years later.

Unless otherwise stated all watches have 7 jewels are working, keep at least reasonable time for their age and wind and set correctly. Lids and bezels are secure, stay closed and where appropriate open when the button or crown is pressed. Any inscriptions, dedications or monograms (other than jewellers and makers marks) and any gold plate worn through to the core will either be shown in the photographs, described in the text or both. Movements carry a 6 or 12 month warranty as described under “Warranty info”.

W723, Keystone Howard Series 5 Railroad Watch, 1915.

This E. Howard watch was made after the companies acquisition by the Keystone Watch Case Company. The lever set movement has Howard's patented jewelled barrel and originally had 19 Jewels but the centre wheel top jewel has been replaced at some point with a bush (Bushing is explained in this blog post), this is not affecting the operation which is very strong with just about the weakest mainspring I could find. The watch has a Breguet sprung cut compensating balance with double roller and screw micro regulator. It is not that common with less than 9,000 of this variant made.

All Howard Railroad Grade movements were adjusted for Isochronism and this is also marked Extra Adjustment, Temperature and Five positions as well as having the arrow and star mark showing the adjustments made. It has a 3 piece double sunk dial . The serial number dates it to 1915.

Ultrasonically cleaned and serviced with a new mainspring and in excellent working order. 12 months warranty.

W723 Keystone Howard 19J Railroad Watch 1915 (3)

The Swing Ring American made case is a J. Boss by the Keystone Watch Case Company and is engraved inside "E. Howard Watch Co. Boston", it has the marks of a top grade 25 year "Extra" 14 carat Filled Gold case which at the time was advertised as "having about TWICE AS MUCH GOLD as any other filled case heretofore made". It has been ultrasonically cleaned and has a new crystal.

Note that it is very important to pull the crown out before swinging the movement out or back in, failure to do so and forcing it can result in significant damage.

W613. Keystone Howard Series 11, RR Chronometer, 21J.

This was made by the E. Howard Company after its acquisition by the Keystone Watch Case Company, it is from the first production run of the highly desirable Series Eleven, lever set, railroad Chronometer watch. There is some confusion as to the date of production, a NAWCC article on Howard watches says that the earliest mention of the S11 in Howard literature is 1918 and the first known advertisement was in 1922 when it was priced at $75 compared to a 21J Bunn Special at $57.50 and a Hamilton 992 at $60. However a reference work gives an estimated date for the serial number as around 1913 or 14.

The 21 Jewel movement has a Breguet sprung cut compensating balance with double roller and screw micro regulator. All Howard movements were adjusted for Isochronism and this is also marked RR Adjustment, Temperature and Five positions as well as "Railroad Chronometer".

Ultrasonically cleaned and serviced with a new mainspring and in excellent working order. 12 months warranty.

The Swing Ring American made case is by the Keystone Watch Case Company and engrave inside "E. Howard Watch Co. Boston", it has the marks of a top grade 25 year J. Boss Filled Gold case, probably 14 carat, with the addition of the word "Extra". Note that before the movement is swung out or back in, the crown must be pulled out into what would be the set position in a pendant set watch. It has been ultrasonically cleaned and has a new crystal.

Ultrasonically cleaned and serviced with a new mainspring and in excellent working order. 12 months warranty.

W711. Waltham 1888-American Watch Co, 19J, 1893.

This is a very rare watch, one of the top watches of its day and now even more sought after than the Riverside Maximus which later replaced it as the top 1888 grade. It gains 3 stars for rarity in the price guide - and they are pretty stingy giving stars!

The size 16, split plate movement has 19 Ruby and Sapphire jewels, a Swiss lever escapement with a Breguet sprung cut compensated balance with double roller and a "tadpole" micro adjuster. The train is gold as are the top jewel settings and balance screws, it is adjusted for temperature, Isochronism and in positions. Crown wound and set. The serial number shows that it was made between April and June 1893.

The dial is a collectors item in its own right, there are a couple of very faint cracks in the glaze that take some finding, but these are fragile dials and this one is almost as good as it gets. At the buyers option I will supply and fit a standard dial if he or she would prefer that, the original will also be sent as the watch and dial should be kept together.

Ultrasonically cleaned and serviced with a new mainspring and keeping excellent time, 12 months warranty.

The American made double backed, triple hinged case is in 20 year filled gold by the Crescent Watch Case Co. The engine turning and die engraving on the back is well worn but no where does it go through to the core. It has been ultrasonically cleaned and has an excellent mineral glass crystal showing no signs of use and probably a recent NOS replacement.

It is very difficult to price this watch as they are rarely traded and it is the first I have seen, however the US price guide, in a weak market (over there), at least shows a stable picture with the same retail price now as in 2012/13 and that is a range of $2,000 to $3,500 with a standard dial. Prior to the plunge in sterling after Brexit this would have equated to about the same in GBP but with the weak pound and generally stronger demand in the UK (I don't know why but that appears to be the case) the range should probably be rather higher. The 25 year engraved case with this watch, the "fancy dial" and the exceptionally good movement would put this watch at the very top of this range or a bit above, but wear to the back of the case makes a big difference. I am therefore offering it at £2,000.

W731. Waltham 1899-A.W.Co Bridge, 23J, 1900

This is a very rare watch, one of the top watches of its day and now even more sought after than the Riverside Maximus, a maximum of 1,010 23J open faced movements were made in 5 runs, this example being from the 1st. The grand total of 1899 Bridge types made was a maximum of 2,660. Due to space limitations I have kept this description brief, fuller details can be found in my blog posting: American Watch Co., Bridge Model. .

The Railroad grade size 16 crown wound and set watch has 23 jewels including the motor barrel and it has diamond end stones to the balance and escape and the rest of the train jewels are ruby or saphire. The Swiss lever escapement has a Breguet sprung cut compensating balance with double roller and micro adjustment, adjusted for temperature, Isochronism and five positions. There wheels of the train are gold (the escape being steel) and much of the ornamentation is in gold. The serial number dates it to 1900.

Ultrasonically cleaned and serviced with a new mainspring and is keeping excellent time, 12 months warranty.

The screw backed case is in 25 year Filled gold by the Crescent Watch Case Company and is probably 14 carat. It has been ultrasonically cleaned and has a new mineral glass crystal from old stock.

W701. Waltham 1908-Vanguard 23J Railroad Watch 1942.

A size 16 Railroad watch. It has 23 jewels including the motor barrel , a Swiss lever escapement and an Elinvar Breguet sprung screwed balance with double roller and micro adjustment, adjusted for temperature, Isochronism and in 6 positions. Lever set at 11 (rather than at 1 as were most earlier Vanguards). The serial number dates it to 1942.

Ultrasonically cleaned and serviced with a new mainspring and is keeping excellent time, 12 months warranty.

The American "Defiance" screw backed case is by the Star Watch Case Co in base metal, the pictures (on my PC) give a good impression of the colour which, except for the bow, has a distinct green tinge probably emulating the US green filled gold cases you occasionally find. At the time of writing I have some rolled gold chains in a similar colour. It has been ultrasonically cleaned and has a new mineral glass crystal from old stock.
