Railroad Watches.

"Railroad grade" is a much abused term but a genuine one is pretty much as good as watch making got at the time. Shown right is a Waltham 1892-Vanguard 21J Railroad Watch.

Probably the most significant size 18 Waltham model in terms of railroad watches is the 1892, of which there were a number of grades, the Vanguard being the highest, but rather than clutter up my limited space here, the best thing to do if you want more information is to look at this site which describes the different grades and pretty much everything else about the movement.

Lever setting was specified for US Railroad watches so that the time could not accidently be changed, particularly when winding. Also it usually makes is easier to accurately set the watch due to is smoother functioning. To change the time it is normally necessary to first unscrew the bezel (a very few have hinged bezels which speeds things up a little), pull out the little leaver with a finger nail, then set the time and then reverse the process.

Watches I describe as "Railroad watches" conformed to all of the requirements for such a watch when manufactured although they may have Canadian rather than American dials, those I describe as "Railroad Grade" are variants of the same quality but may have a non-conforming dial or have been made with crown rather than lever setting for non-railroad use.

Unless otherwise stated all watches have 7 jewels, are working, keep at least reasonable time for their age and wind and set correctly. Lids and bezels are secure, stay closed and where appropriate open when the button or crown is pressed. Any inscriptions, dedications or monograms (other than jewellers and makers marks) and any gold plate worn through to the core will either be shown in the photographs, described in the text or both. Movements carry a 6 or 12 month warranty as described under “Warranty info”.

Size 18 - American Railroad Watches and S18 Watches by Waltham . W682f

W682. Illinois #6 "Bunn", 17J Railroad Watch, 1899.

This is a size 18 lever set "North American Railroad" grade watch, originally it would have met the full standard (and more) but the lack of a double roller would have quickly disqualified it although watches already in use were normally given "grandfather rights" so they could continue to be used. It has a "Safety Pinion" and is adjusted to temperature, in an unknown number of positions and probably for isochronism. The Swiss lever escapement has a Breguet sprung cut compensating balance with micro adjuster. The serial number dates it to 1899.

Serviced and with a new mainspring, it is keeping excellent time 12 months warranty.
