International Watch Co. (IWC) & Stauffer

IWC were founded in 1868 and have always been in the business of making prestige watches, now they are one of the most collected, counterfeited and wrongly attributed brands. Although counterfeiting is not a particular issue with old pocket watches, miss-attribution is, particularly in the UK, this is because UK arm of the Swiss Stauffer company had the sole distribution rights for IWC in the UK and (by default?) the British "Empire", had trade marks, names and Logo's similar to the IWC and put them on the other makers watches that they distributed including those of Stauffer Switzerland, Fabrique d'Horlogerie de Fontainemelon (FHF), Eterna, Revue and others.

As IWC is the most prestigious brand anything with the Stauffer marks and trade name tends to get attributed to IWC, particularly on eBay! Many IWC watches are branded "Peerless" by Stauffer but so were watches by other makers which adds to the confusion. There is no point in plagiarising good work done elsewhere so google searches will provide more information (and at least some of it will be good!) alternatively this site by Michael Friedberg appears to be the best around for IWC pocket watches. There is a similar problem with those watches with the Swiss Stauffer marks as these were used on Stauffer made watches and those by others. There is an awful lot of information about Stauffer, their trade marks and history on David Boettcher's web site, linked here.

J.W. Benson - Swiss made.

Their Swiss Keyless watches are almost all of very good to excellent quality and then as now commanded a premium price.

Benson sourced Swiss watches from a number of companies but the better quality ones initially came primarily from Longines / Baume with Revue Thommen appearing to take over after WWI and Tavannes in the 1930's with some from other makers in lower volume.

Revue Thommen made 15 & 16 jewel movements for Benson which are normally gilt and marked "Benson" on the movement, it is not unusual to find Benson dials on lower quality unmarked nickel plated movements and Dennison or Swiss cases but I suspect many of these were not made for Benson and have had a dial transplant.

Adverts in this section are from a Benson sales Catalogue c 1935
Clicking on the one above will take you to a gallery showing them in high quality.

You may find these Tavannes movements described elsewhere as being by their sister Coompany Cyma but I never seen a Benson with Cyma style plates. The production for Benson in size 12 & 16 were 15 or 16 Jewel in both open faced and hunter. There is a description of the range in the 1930s on my blog.

Movements by Revue and Tavannes from the 1920s and 30s are normally in English cases with Benson hallmarks although they bought these in, primarily from Benson Bros of Liverpool (no relation). An exception is during 1933/4 as explained in my blog post Benson movements in Dennison cases. Longines and some low volume products have third party makers marks, sometimes accompanied by the Benson mark, and pre WWI were usually engraved on the dust cover "Especial Examined by J.W. Benson" or similar.
